Police tell us a woman killed by an officer when she pointed a gun at him, was Pamela Dale Kirk, 63, of Tampa. She died at Bayfront Medical Center on Sunday.
At about 8 p.m. St. Petersburg Police officers responded to a home in the 2600 block of 13th Avenue North on a "Check on Welfare" type of call. The neighbor who called the police reported that they were concerned about a woman in her early 50's who lived at the house.
"A neighbor called and said that his or her neighbor had been acting strange all day, had asked the neighbor to watch the dog. Maybe this person had some mental issues," said St. Petersburg Police spokesman Bill Proffitt.
Two officers, along with an officer in training arrived on the house. Two of them went to the front door. One of the officers went around the back of the residence. Investigators say he knocked on the back door and saw the woman through a window.
"She pulled the blinds back. She stood in the window. She had a silver-colored revolver, 38-special. She pointed the revolver at the police officer. He fired three times," said Proffitt.
Police said she was hit twice. Paramedics took the woman to a local hospital, where she died minutes later.
Officers told us they came to same house last year for a Baker Act. Proffitt was unsure if the same woman was involved in that May incident. Neighbor Tony Towns said there was also a lot of police activity at the house several weeks ago.
"They had this whole thing blocked off a month ago and they were right there at the same place," said Towns.
Both St. Petersburg Police and the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office will investigate the woman's death. Additionally, the department's Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative investigation.
The two officers and the officer in training were placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. Proffitt says that's standard policy when there's an officer involved shooting.
