ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

The 30th annual St. Anthony's Triathlon went off without a hitch on Sunday.

Police officers were out in force making sure the event was safe and enjoyable. Athletes were also given clear bags for their belongings, so security officers did not have to go through backpacks.

Jan Frodeno, from Germany, was the winner in the men's race, with a time of 1 hour and 47 minutes.  He says it was a tough race, with tough competition.

"It was really, just trying to keep a long stride. I knew the guys were coming," said Frodeno.  "I know them all from the world circuit. They're just consistent strong guys. They may not have the top speed but they can just grind it up which is what you need here. "

Frodeno says the Boston Marathon bombing would never deter him from competing in a race.

"I think it's really disgusting that people abuse that and therefore I think it's very important every day that we go out there and keep showing sort of our sign of freedom which is sports," Frodeno said.

Alicia Kaye took first place in the woman's race, with a time of 1 hour 57 minutes.

Kaye once lived in Boston.  Her mother-in-law currently lives there, and had actually crossed the finish line of the marathon just 90 seconds before the bomb went off.  Kaye says what happened there had a big impact on her.

"I wrote 'Boston strong' on both of my legs today," said Kaye. "And just really used the survivor's will to survive as my inspiration for today."

3,500 athletes competed in the triathlon.  Those competitors came from 44 states and 23 different countries.
