Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG -

Witnesses tell police a bicyclist didn't yield at the stop sign and got hit by a motorcycle in St. Petersburg Friday morning.

St. Petersburg Police was on scene blocking the street to investigate. SPPD officers told us, a bicyclist was riding down 7th Street near 1st Avenue North and didn't stop for the sign. The bicycle rode through the intersection and the motorcycle hit it, according to the preliminary investigation.

Both riders were ejected and landed on the roadway. The bicycle and the motorcycle got entangled on impact. After they separated, the motorcycle kept moving. It hit a sign and a tree before coming to a full stop.

Jason Peter Smith, 40, was on the bicycle. He is at Bayfront Medical Center. Doctors listed his condition as critical. Officers said, he was not wearing a helmet.

Thomas Lepka, 44, who was driving the motorcycle, had his helmet on. He had minor injuries, according to the police report. Paramedics took him to Bayfront as well.

Police haven't charged anyone yet. The investigation continues.
