The community of Lake Wales is mourning the loss of Omar Ontiveros, 17, who died Sunday after a car crash.  That crash also injured two of his friends.

Grief counselors spent the day at Lake Wales High School, where all three teens were students.

"It's been a very sad day, a very rough day," said Dalton Torres, who knew all three boys involved in Friday's crash.

Lake Wales Police say 17-year-old Keyshawn Johnson was driving his 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier and lost control on J.A. Wiltshire Boulevard Friday afternoon. The car left the road and crashed into a tree. Investigators say Ontiveros was sitting in the back seat, and suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Another 17-year-old, Lee Luzon, suffered serious injuries and is still hospitalized.

"Keyshawn is, I think, in shock," explained teacher June Ullman. "I think his heart is broken because he's lost one of his very, very dear friends."

Students say Omar Ontiveros was a quiet but funny kid who was liked by everyone.

"He was always like the hype man, like he'd always make you laugh in class if you were sad," said classmate Nicholas Callahan. "He was just there if you needed him. He was just a good friend over all.".

School officials held a special assembly Monday morning paying tribute to all three students. They say more than 1,200 students attended.

"There was just an outpouring of love in just this quiet way. Two moments of silence, and it was silent. It was silent in there," Ullman said.

Lake Wales Police say no charges have been filed in Friday's accident.
