HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

"Operation Gun Swap" came to a fiery end in Hillsborough County today.

The Sheriff's Office collected 2,500 unwanted firearms in February.  "Operation Gun Swap" was so popular that officials ran out of cash to buy weapons, and had to give out vouchers to be redeemed for cash later.  On Friday, detectives loaded up the weapons and took them to a steel mill to be melted down.

Rifles, shotguns, and handguns were incinerated in a 3,200-degree furnace. The packaging, transport and destruction of the unwanted firearms was supervised by a team of HCSO detectives.

Sheriff's officials say the melted metal that was once weapons will become rebar and coat hangers.

With a toss of a football, Charlie Crist boarded the bus in Orlando. “On to victory,” Crist announced, as he headed to his seat. It's a campaign tour that might have seemed improbable just a few years ago. But the former governor is on the campaign trail again, trying to win over voters to win back his old job in Tallahassee.
