Highway 27 reopened after Polk semi crash

Posted: Updated:
POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Both northbound and southbound lanes of US Highway 27 were shut down for eight hours Friday morning due to a fiery crash involving three tractor trailers.  It happened near Collany Lane in Frostproof.

Polk County Fire Rescue officials first arrived at the scene at 2:40 AM and found two semi trucks on fire.

Polk Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Donna Wood said there were actually two accidents on the rural stretch of road.  Around 2:37 AM, Jerry Fritchey, 54, was traveling northbound on US Highway 27 when he hit another semi truck driven by Alan Timothy, 57.

Timothy told deputies he pulled over up the road and called 911 when he saw there was damage to his truck.  Meanwhile, Fritchey's tractor trailer sat disabled on the highway, with no lights.  He was attempting to flag down help when the driver of the third truck, a 1996 Freightliner, hit his truck in the darkness.  Both of the trucks burst into flames during that accident.

Paramedics took Fritchey to Heart of Florida Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The other two drivers were not injured.

The Highway reopened just after 11:00 AM.  Wood said the investigation is ongoing.
