Metro Rapid rolling out this summer in Tampa Bay

Posted: Updated:

A different kind of HART bus is hitting the streets in a few months. The new system is called MetroRapid. The goal is to make the commute quicker and easier. It's a welcome change to commuters like Patrick Davis.

"I'm pretty sure they're doing what they can," Davis said. "But anything to make the buses quicker and get us to work on time will help."

Katharine Eagan, Chief Operating Officer of HART, says the bright green buses will run on a traffic signal priority, speeding up the drive.

"Ambulances have this, firetrucks have this," Eagan said. "Obviously buses will be after those live saving services."

If a bus is running behind the driver can hold the green light for 10-15 seconds. The new buses roll out June 10 and the first two weeks are free. The project was funded by Hillsborough County Community Investment Tax.
