Domestic Partner Registry opens in Pinellas County

Posted: Updated:
CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

Pinellas County fell in line with cities like St. Petersburg and started registering domestic partners Monday.

Three of the first seven couples to sign up have same-sex relationships the other four are male-female relationships.

The Registry is open to any adult partners who meet certain criteria such as living together and considering each other responsible for basic needs such as food and shelter.

One of the first couples to sign up at the Clearwater Courthouse was Kyle Cortorreal and his fiance Liz Lindberg. Cortorreal waited until his lunch hour because he was busy signing up other couples in his job as a staff member of the Clerk of Courts.

Cortorreal and Lindberg say it is a misconception that domestic partnerships are geared toward same-sex couples.

They signed up as a step toward marriage during their engagement, in case one of them becomes ill and the other one wants to participate in medical decisions and have hospital access. The registration process makes them health surrogates for each other.

The Pinellas County Domestic Partner Registry list will become public by day's end. To find the list you can log on to www.mypinellasclerk.org.

Couples who sign up will also receive cards certifying their legal partnership.

Either partner can end their partnership status by filing an affidavit of termination in writing. Registration costs $50 but termination is free.
