US Postal Saturday delivery won't go away after all

PALM HARBOR, FL (WFLA) -

With rising red ink, the U.S. Postal Service hatched a plan to do away with Saturday delivery starting August 5th. But congress threw a wrench in that plan, saying the people who run the Post Office acted without approval.

"Congress stood up today for the first time and told the postmaster general, you are wrong. There is no loophole in the law" said Florida Letter Carrier Union President Al Friedman.  He says Americans depend on 6-day delivery. He understands the need to save money but believes a management reduction could save millions.

The Postal Board of Governors was hoping, getting rid of Saturday delivery would save the service 2 billion dollars a year. Now that they have to go back to the drawing board, they're considering a new postal rate increase.

Not having Saturday deliveries is the norm for people living in Coastal Ozona, where Susan Caswell lives. "You can get used to it. You just have to plan ahead" she said.

The Post Office lost almost 16 billion last year, and is on a path to lose billions more in 2013. It's Board of Governors wrote, "the postal service may become a burden to the American taxpayer, which is avoidable. " Customer tom brewer wouldn't mind. "I believe they should in fact I think congress ought to fund em" he said.

Bottom line, changes need to happen if the service is to survive.
