The U.S. Coast Guard is pressing local boaters into service. It wants them to help in the search for Cole and Chase Hakken. The Coast Guard is currently broadcasting this emergency message over the airwaves to mariners across the bay area:
"The Coast Guard is searching for a 25ft blue s/v Salty with 2 adults and 2 children on board that departed Madeira beach at 10am local on 03 April. Destination unknown. All vessels in the area are requested to keep a sharp lookout, do not approach the vessel, the occupants are considered armed and dangerous and immediately report all sightings to the U.S. Coast Guard on channel 16 or by land line 727-824-7506."
The Coast Guard is currently working with the FBI, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission searching for Cole and Chase Hakken, who investigators say were abducted by their father on Wednesday and are likely traveling in the Gulf of Mexico. The children's mother, Sharyn, is also believed to be on board.
Daniel Hall says he's heard about the case, but didn't spot any boats matching that description. "We was checking out all the sailboats today," said Hall, "but we didn't see anything that looked familiar."
Joanne Loy spent the day on the water with her children and grandchildren. She says she didn't spot the boat either, but has a strong opinion about this case. "Anytime it involves children it's always a concern. It's a tragedy," said Loy. "The grandmother should have the children if that's what the courts have deemed. And it much be a tragedy for her. Can you imagine what she's going through right now?"
