SCSO dismantles meth lab in Nokomis

Posted: Updated:

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office responded to a wooded area at the dead end of Lucille ave. in Nokomis after receiving a report of a possible methamphetamine lab.  When deputies arrived at the location, they made contact with a man walking out of the woods.  Deputies detained the man while another deputy continued into the woods.  This man's identity has not been given at this time

The deputy discovered a tent containing 32-year-old Shaemus M. Lonergan and an unidentified woman.  The deputy reported that Lonergan was attempting to hide items in the tent as he approached.  However, the deputy immediately observed a clear plastic Gatorade bottle containing an unidentified liquid, white residue,  and lithium strips.  During a search of Lonergan, deputies also found an Aleve-D sinus and cold tablet.

During an interview with the unidentified woman, she stated that Lonergan needed a place to stay for the night and that he brought the meth making materials with him.  The woman also stated that she knew Lonergan was a meth user and that she believed he was cooking the drug.  Deputies say she also reported that Lonergan had several burns on his hands which he told her were from a recent explosion when he was cooking meth.

Once deputies determined that the tent was an active meth lab, they contacted Sarasota County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit for assistance in removal of the materials.  Detectives assigned to the SCSO Special Investigation Section responded to the scene and took charge of the investigation.

Lonergan was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, manufacturing of methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of listed chemicals.  All of which are felonies.

Anyone with further information about this lab is encouraged to call the special investigations section at 941-861-4265 or 941-861-5800.  Those wishing to leave an anonymous tip with Crimestoppers can call 941-366 tips (8477),  or go online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com or text tip109 plus a message to crimes (274637).
