University of Tampa men's lacrosse team hits new field

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Last February the UT Men's Lacrosse team joined the NCAA. A little more than a year later and the guys will be starting season two on a new field.

"It's nice having a consistent field you don't have to worry about stepping in a hole," Eric Dance, lacrosse player and Tampa native, said. "You always know you have a field."

The field's far from the former spot, which was tucked away on campus. Short stick defensive mid-fielder, Mike Tyrrell, says the prime location, right on Kennedy Boulevard, will give his sport more exposure.

"It's unbelievable they've got us out right on Kennedy it's a major thoroughfare," Tyrrell said. "People are going to see us playing at night and we're going to gain a lot of exposure for the game."

Rory Whipple's been coaching lacrosse for more than 30 years and says lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the US.

"I started playing lacrosse when I was five and now I love coaching," Whipple said. "I remember bringing my college teams to Florida and only 10 or 12 schools had teams. Now we have 175 schools playing men's lacrosse."

With 40-foot high stadium seats about 2,000 fans can pack the stands. The guys hope their new digs will help them reach their ultimate goal.

"it helps with the championship attitude we already have here at UT," Dance said. "now you'll feel it even more when you walk on the field."

The men take the field for the first game of the season Friday at 8 p.m. There's a field dedication ceremony at 7:25.
