Pinellas deputies make first spice arrest

Posted: Updated:
ST PETE BEACH, FL (WFLA) -

Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies say they have made their first arrest under an emergency order that has made k2/spice items illegal.

Deputies arrested 40-year-old Nadeem Malik, a convenience store clerk at Sunshine Food and Gifts on Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach.

Malik sold undercover detectives the k2/spice items on January 9th and 11th.  The substances were taken to a lab and were determined to have contained the chemical XLR-11.

Detectives returned to the store on Tuesday to arrest Malik.  He voluntarily surrendered four large Zip-lock freezer bags containing different types of "potpourri" items.

Among the items surrendered were 104 small canisters of the same K-2 spice purchase by the undercover detective; 29 additional canisters with a different date and with a disclaimer stating it complied with current legal guidelines; and 122 foil packages containing similar substances.  The approximate value of the items is $2,280.

Malik told detectives he sold these items under the order of the store owner.  Malik was charged with two counts of Sales and Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession with Intent to Sell a Controlled Substance.  Malik bonded out of jail Wednesday morning.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
