Polk County teens collecting prom dresses for charity

Posted: Updated:

Prom season is in full swing, but high school's big night comes with a pretty big price tag that some students simply can't afford.

"Prom is really expensive," explained 17-year-old junior Michelle Luckett. "Once you get everything put together, your hair, nails, dress, shoes, tickets, dinner, it's $500 or above just for one night," she said.

That's why Luckett and a group of fellow service club members from Chain of Lakes Collegiate High School at Polk State College are teaming up with the Women's Resource Center to collect prom dresses for girls who couldn't afford them otherwise.

"You never want to be embarrassed because you can't go to prom because you didn't have a dress," said Abby Hughes, an 18-year-old senior at Chain of Lakes Collegiate High School.

The students have already collected close to 40 dresses which are on sale at the Women's Resource Center for far less than they retailed originally.

"The prices are $10 or less," said WRC Executive Director JoAnn Schaffer.

She says many students have already come in and chosen a dress that works.

"We've probably sold maybe 10-15 already," Schaffer said.

For Michelle Luckett, Abby Hughes and their classmates the whole effort is about making an important milestone achievable for everyone.

"If we can make those dresses affordable for them to wear then they can have one and have the same experience as all of us," Hughes said.

The girls will continue to collect prom dresses through May 1st.  Donations can be made at the Women's Resource Center at 165 Avenue A NW Winter Haven.
