NEW PORT RICHEY, FL (WFLA) -

William Hurst sat in a Pasco County courtroom and listened as his friends testified... Telling the jury about a 30- year secret.

On the witness stand... Elmer Kruse talked about the day he says Hurst revealed his dark secret

"He said my past has finally caught up to me and he got up and started pacing and he said I'm going to go to prison for the rest of my life if I don't get electrocuted."

Hurst is accused of killing his wife Amy in 1982 and dumping her body in the Gulf of Mexico.

Family reported her missing but the case went cold.

In 2011, Amy's son found clues online that helped identify Amy's body.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office focused its investigation on William.

Elmer Kruse said William told him, "I got rid of the body the way you're supposed to get rid of the body he said I wrapped it up in plastic tied a concrete block around it and took it out and dropped it in the water. He said but I guess they found it."

Kruse said Hurst then told him about what he planned to do next.

"He said I have a 45 pistol. He said I may just take and end it all and I said well that would be quick and he said no he said I think I might see how many I can take with me when they come to get me."

Kruse made contact with a Pasco County detective , who asked him to wear a recording device the next time he talked to Hurst.

The defense asked Kruse if he knew how Amy died.

"He never said to you how Amy Hurst died did he?....no he didn't."

Another friend of Hurst's... Candice Spinks, was also wearing a wire when she talked to him about Amy.

On the tape, Hurst denied killing her and said he had no idea how her body ended up in the gulf.

Spinks says William told her, "it doesn't matter anyway he said I done got rid of all the evidence."

The state has rested and the defense decided not to call any witnesses. Closing arguments are set for tomorrow and the jury will then start to deliberate.
