TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The search for a couple accused of abducting their own children will likely grow farther across the country as the day goes on.

Wednesday night, the state of Louisiana issued an Amber Alert on behalf of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement but deputies know since they've passed the 24-hour window the search area will grow even more.

"We really don't have any idea where this couple may be and based on the time of this incident [Wednesday] morning – it could be anywhere in the southeastern part of the United States," said Larry McKinnon, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, during the last 9:30 briefing Wednesday night.

Deputies said it started Wednesday morning at 6:30 when Joshua Hakken, 35, went to his mother-in-law's home at 14040 Shady Shores Dr. and took 2-year-old Chase Hakken and 4-year-old Cole Hakken. Detectives believe the boys' mother, Sharyn Patricia Hakken, 34, may also be with them.

Joshua Hakken tied up of Patricia Hauser, the children's maternal grandmother, and left in her 2009 Silver Toyota Camry, according to investigators. They say it took Hauser half an hour to free herself from the zip-ties Joshua used to tie her up.

"That in itself is a state of mind that in our belief is unstable," McKinnon said. "We know he has a history of violence and if history is any prediction of the future – it concerns us."

Deputies believe the couple ditched the grandmother's Camry and are now likely in Joshua Hakken's pickup.

"The car was recovered a few blocks away from the scene," said Hillsborough Co. Corporal Kevin Bodie.

By sundown detectives executed a search warrant at the couple's home at 3609 S. Sterling Ave. in South Tampa. They took out computers and other evidence.

"That may give us the amount of information so that we can narrow it down ... and get these kids back," McKinnon said.

Detectives say there's evidence the couple are survivalists who believe there are no U.S. government laws. They lost custody of the children during a visit to Louisiana years ago.

"We know that they had been attending an anti-government rally … the father had gotten arrested for some drug possession charges and for whatever reason the state of Louisiana decided to take custody from the couple at that time," McKinnon said. "Right after that – we know that he went to the foster care facility and ended up banging on the door, pulling a gun and tried to get those kids back."

IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING

Deputies ask anyone with any information dial 911 or call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200. They consider the couple armed and dangerous.
