Charges dropped against Manatee couple in medical marijuana case

Posted: Updated:
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The charges have been dropped against a Manatee County couple in a medical marijuana case.

Manatee County Sheriff's deputies raided the home of 64-year-old Robert Jordan in February and found a number of marijuana plants.

Late Tuesday the State Attorney's office in Manatee County decided to drop the charges against Jordan.

Robert Jordan says he grows marijuana to help his wife Cathy who suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease.

Cathy Jordan says marijuana is the only thing that gives her comfort and is keeping her alive.

Robert Jordan says he feels vindicated. Jordan says, "We've been doing this for 16 years and you know, finally it went through the legal system and they're saying we're right, all along."

Robert Jordan says the legal case has been weighing heavily on him. Jordan says, "Well, I didn't sleep real good and you've got something hanging over you and I heard from probation to five years. So, I slept good last night."

Jordan also says, he would do it all again for his wife.

"There is a time, you got to stand up, you've got to stand up and that's the problem, too many people don't stand up today, they just go along and we're losing our rights left and right."

The "Florida Can Network" advocates for the use of medical Marijuana.

Robert and Cathy Jordan are currently in Tallahassee speaking to state legislators about a bill to make the use of marijuana legal in Florida for medical purposes.

A spokesperson for the State Attorney's office in Manatee County says the prosecutor in the case decided to drop the charges against Mr. Jordan because his attorney provided evidence about Cathy Jordan's need for marijuana based on medical need.

The spokesperson says there is case law in Florida that allows the use of marijuana for medical reasons.
