Semi trailer spills cement on road, closes Crosstown - WFLA News Channel 8

One lane open after semi trailer spilled cement on road, closed Crosstown

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Officials with Florida Department of Transportation opened one westbound lane on the Selmon Expressway after it was blocked off for hours. A semi tractor-trailer carrying a load of cement turned on its side on the highway near downtown Tampa Tuesday morning. It shut down the westbound lanes of the roadway.

The truck driver Mark Owen Pickard, 45, of Seffner, lost control of the semi near exit 8 and smashed into a plastic crash cushion by the ramp.

After the initial hit, the trailer dragged along the concrete barrier wall for about 600 feet and stopped, leveling three lights polls attached to it.

Rescue teams treated Pickard for minor injuries at the scene. Officials charged Pickard with careless driving.

The semi spilled bags of dry cement on the road. FDOT officials told us, they expected to clean up the second westbound lane by 4 p.m. today.

Authorities advise drivers to leave the Selmon Expressway at exit 9 (21st and 22nd streets) and re-enter at Morgan/Brorein Street entrance ramp. You can travel through downtown Tampa or take Interstates 4 and 275 as alternate routes.

Stay with wfla.com and we will let you know when the road opens up.
