First Pinellas county educators and now Hillsborough county teachers are spending part of their weekend in the classroom learning about gun safety and getting their concealed weapons permit.
For this weekend's class more than 100 people pre-registered and eighty-six turned out for the for hour class taught by International Executive Protection owner Lenny Bogdanos.
Bogdanos explains how he started teaching this very popular course.
"I started out with a few of my friends in the Pinellas County School system and it went viral and we literally had over 200 teachers sign up"
The cost of the class is normally about $75 but Bogdanos has been offering the class to teachers with a valid school identification free of charge.
"We are doing everything the state needs us to do to comply with their rules and regulations so the teachers can get a cancelled weapons permit."
The recent mass shootings from Connecticut to Colorado are what some teachers say motivated them to take the course.
Carlos Dixon has been teaching for eight years but this is his first year at Strawberry Crest High School. He says the shooting have been on his mind.
"I don't walk around on the school campus daily thinking that something is going to happen like what happened up in Connecticut and over in Colorado years ago. But I would rather be prepared than not prepared in case something happens like that."
The classes are open to the public but teachers are the priority and Instructor Bogdanos says it's his company's way to "extend a special thanks to teachers for their hard work and dedication."
