Hiring Our Heroes job fair coming to Tampa

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, was launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment.

Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's network of 1600 state and local chambers and other strategic partners from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, our goal is to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day.

Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 430 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

Through December 31, 2012, more than 18,400 veterans and military spouses had obtained jobs.

"Our goal is to offer veterans tangible tools that help them with their transition back into the workforce and civilian life," commented Beth Colleton, Senior Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility, NBCUniversal. "We look forward to working with the entire Comcast and NBCUniversal family in collaboration with stellar partners like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to continue to expand our veteran initiatives."

Over 93,000 veterans have been hired to date by companies across America as a result of Hiring Our Heroes pledges. In 2012, the Commerce's Foundation recognized Comcast with its Hiring Our Heroes Lee Anderson Award for our support of the program.

Two years ahead of schedule, the plan now is to deliver on a new commitment that doubles the original pledge-hiring an additional 1,000 U.S. veterans by 2015.

"We are thrilled to have reached our original hiring commitment early," said Bill Strahan, Executive Vice President of Human Resources, Comcast Cable.  "We have had the privilege of hiring extremely talented men and women over the last year and we look forward to making our workforce even stronger with our next wave of veterans joining our team."

"To move the needle on veteran unemployment, it will take companies increasing their levels of veteran hiring and Comcast and NBCUniversal have stepped up to do just that," said Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Schmiegel (ret.), executive director of Hiring Our Heroes. "Comcast and NBCUniversal are among the biggest supporters of our program and through their dedication and leadership, we are seeing a difference in how businesses across America are recognizing the value in hiring a veteran."

The Hiring Our Heroes effort will be in Tampa on April 9. The event takes place at the Ragan Community Center, 1200 East Lake Avenue between 10am-1pm.
