Monday's Most Wanted: stolen paychecks cashed around region

ELIZABETHTON, TN -

Elizabethton Police want to talk to the men photographed by bank surveillance cameras about stolen payroll checks cashed at banks across the Tri-Cities region.

"In a matter of approximately 2 hours, these suspects were able to cash approximately 10 checks and walk away with nearly $10,000 just in Elizabethton," said Capt. Joy Markland, Elizabethton Police.

That was last January 11th.

The men cashed the checks at two branches of Elizabethton Federal Bank in Elizabethton and one in Johnson City.

"They were legitimate payroll checks from an actual business in another Tri-Cities area, but they had been stolen," said Markland.

Elizabethton wasn't the only town hit.   Similar crimes with similar suspects also reported in Johnson City, Greene County, and Unicoi County.  Police believe this could involve several suspects.

"That's why it's very important that we try to get to these individuals and talk to them to see if we can get the entire story of what's going on," Markland said.
