ST. PETERSBURG, FL -
As St. Petersburg revs up for the Honda Grand Prix, a tribute was unveiled Thursday to honor the memory of local racing legend Dan Wheldon.
The monument was unveiled Thursday, along with a memorial for the Honda Grand Prix Victory Circle. The monuments will be on display for the public during the entire race weekend and will stay as a permanent tribute.
The Indy race car driver died in October of 2011 in a fiery crash at the Las Vegas Speedway.
Wheldon told News Channel 8 before his death in 2011, he wanted to win another round of the Honda Grand Prix for his adopted hometown of St. Petersburg. A concrete monolith will be on permanent display at the corner of Bayshore Drive SE and Albert Whitted Park to ensure his legacy lives on.
"I think for us having a permanent monument on a year round basis firmly establishes us as a part of the community long term," said Tim Ramsberger, President of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
The City of St. Petersburg teamed up with INDYCAR, American Honda Motor Company, and the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg for the project.
