ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

An old scam is making the rounds again and St. Petersburg police are putting out a warning so there won't be more victims.

The robbers pretend to be utility workers to gain access to your home."They try to keep one person in the kitchen area while the other person goes to the back rooms, looks for money, looks for jewelry any personal items they can stick in their pockets," said Mike Puetz, St. Petersburg Police Department spokesperson.

In one recent case, a man knocked on the door of 93-year old Ruby Lynch. He told her the water main was broken and he was from the city water department."He said well I'd like to come inside and check your water and all of a sudden there was another guy with him," said Lynch.

The second man went to the bathroom in the back of her house while the first man asked Ruby to assist him. He asked her to knock on the water faucet with a spoon while he laid down on the floor to listen.Ruby became suspicious and asked them to leave.

Another another elderly man was targeted and police believe there may be more victims.

According to police, it's a common scam when traveling con artists come through town this time of year.

Personal wipes, baby wipes, face wipes, flushable wipes. They are all designed to help us deal with delicate issues. But the wipes themselves are actually pretty sturdy and increasingly local water systems are finding they are creating costly problems.
