Florida gas prices trending downward thanks to national average

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 4.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.71/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.65/g, according to gasoline price Website GasBuddy.com.

As for the Bay Area, the average retail price per gallon of gas Sunday was 3.167/g falling .045 cents from last week's average of 3.662/g.  Further, the Bay Area's average price per gallon was significantly lower yesterday than a month ago when the price was 3.760/g, a .593 cent decrease.  Why are Florida's prices higher than the national average?  According to GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick DeHaan, "Florida remains consistently higher than the national average thanks to higher average combined taxes and a lack of petroleum infrastructure, which adds slightly to the cost of gasoline."

GasBuddy.com also predicted the current gas price trend to continue lower after the run up that started in early January.  DeHaan said, "While another round of increases may take place in April or May, we do not anticipate the average price breaking $4.00/g in the Bay Area. It is possible that it could happen, but not anywhere near imminent. I still believe gas prices in 2013 will finish with a lower yearly average than 2012."

We can thank the relatively stable national average gas price for Florida's lower price average.  "While the national average hasn't seen much movement, some areas of the country have seen volatility continue, mainly in the Great Lakes states where prices may again be poised to rise in the next couple of days as wholesale prices reverberate as refineries continue their maintenance schedules and the progressive switch over to summer gasoline continues," DeHaan said.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
