There are many theories and just as many clues that may explain what led Pennsylvania tourist Chad Wolfe to fall to his death in a Tampa International terminal elevator shaft. It happened Friday after he and his girlfriend arrived on a Delta flight.
A state inspector found the locking mechanism on the elevator where Chad Wolfe got in was compromised but what they don't know is if he actually did it or if it was like that before he fell.
"We have no evidence of that lock not operating properly prior to the incident" said vice president of facilities and administration for the airport. TIA officials say, security camera video shows Chad and his girlfriend taking separate elevators from the third floor. She went down to baggage claim, he headed up to short-term parking on the 7th floor.
The flight crew reports, Chad was belligerent and the crew even considered calling police when they landed. "We have learned that Chad Wolfe appeared to be intoxicated to a high degree. And exhibiting erratic behavior both on the aircraft and in the terminal," said Airport Police Chief, Paul Sireci. Chad's father told investigators, his son drinks when he takes Xanax. Police say they found an empty Xanax bottle and an airline size vodka bottle in his pocket.
"We don't know at this point definitively how this young man entered the elevator shaft. And at this point we have no specific definitive evidence that the elevator doors were open" said Chief Sireci.
They do know that the impact of his fall shattered the florescent lights inside the elevator. Investigators are not ruling out any possibility to answer how he got inside the shaft.
