Painful spinal fractures are now being treated in Tampa Bay with a breakthrough medical treatment that has patients up and moving in just hours after the procedure.
"It was like a miracle", said 86-year-old Lily Fishman who underwent a Kyphoplasty after a painful compression fracture.
Through x-ray guidance neurosurgeon Dr. Larry Fishman can stabilize a patient's spine by using a small balloon to expand the spine and then fill the fractured area with a cement type material.
Patient don't have to go under general anesthesia as Kyphoplasty only takes minutes to perform with very few restrictions after surgery.
"They are better off when they started, and I don't say you can't do this you can't do that", said Dr. Fishman of Brandon Regional Hospital.
Conventional treatment can involve patients wearing a back brace for weeks if not months and taking powerful pain medications.
