Jesuit High students pray for new pope

Tampa Bay -

Students at a Bay area boys' school are buzzing about the new Pope. Jesuit High School faculty members and students started their school day Thursday at a special service in honor of Pope Francis.

"To have it be a Jesuit is really special to all of us here," said sophomore Bobby Hearn.

The new Pope is a member of the church's Jesuit order, which the school is named after and based on.

"He would have gone to a school like this in Argentina. He would have taught at a Jesuit high school. He would have been overseeing the Jesuit high schools in Argentina," explained Father Matthew Gamber.

Some students said they feel like they can actually relate to him.

"At Jesuit High School every day they preach to us the message of Jesuit, which is be a man for others, to help others, and to live your faith and we really believe in that and we're really excited to have someone like that as the Pope of our church," said Hearn.

As they prayed together, students said they feel fortunate to be part of such a historic time for Catholics.

"Everybody was more involved than usual because it's really close to our hearts," said sophomore Alejandro Cartaya.

The lessons from the Vatican are extending beyond the campus chapel to the classrooms. Father Gamber said he assigned his Theology classes to write a biography on the Cardinal of their choice earlier in the month. He joked he would fly any student to Rome who picked the new Pope.

"Unfortunately nobody picked Cardinal Bergoglio," said Father Gamber. "At least I don't have to find a way to get them over there."
