MANATEE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

A Bradenton mother was arrested and charged with child neglect charges after officials discovered her 3-year-old special needs son wandering around a neighborhood street Friday; while she was high on marijuana, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

A neighbor who found the child called police after seeing the boy walking down the street by himself. The neighbor told police they knew the child.

Manatee County deputies were able to make contact with the child mother, Ashley Nitz, 23. When the mother opened the door, investigators were "overwhelmed by the odor of marijuana," the report stated.  The mother's eyes were bloodshot and "somewhat lethargic," officials said.

Nitz told investigators she had forgotten to lock the door when she went to sleep that afternoon. A drug test came back positive for the use of marijuana.

Nitz was arrested on child neglect. Her 3-year-old son was taken by Child Protective Services. Nitz has been previously arrested for drug and probation violations, according to public records.
