Remember Florida's March storm of 1993

Posted: Updated:

The super-storm that slammed Florida before moving through 21 other states.

It wasn't a hurricane, so the unnamed storm was given several titles, " The Storm of the Century", OR "The Great March Storm".

Early on the morning of March 13 1993, Don Bax couldn't believe what he was seeing from his second story window on Clearwater beach." A flood from the Carlouel area came thru with a big wave ," said Bax.

His home is built on stilts but he watched the water sweep away his boat. It floated down the road until he found it in a neighbor's yard days later. "So we basically got 3 1/2 feet of water and it wiped out two of my cars," said Bax.

Other areas fared much worse.

The fast moving squall line created 100 mile per hour wind gusts and a storm surge from 6 to 12 feet along the Florida coastline flooded neighborhoods everywhere along the coast.

One of the hardest hit areas was Hernando County.

The National Weather Service documented 11 tornadoes, one of the twisters killed three people in Citrus County.
