Sinkhole under Hernando County home has couple losing sleep

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL -

John Furlow was working in his yard, next to his pool pump when the ground gave way. He fell into a hole at least five feet deep and eight to nine feet long. That was in August of 2011. Since then, John Furlow and his wife Tina say they've been fighting with their insurance company to have the problem and the damage fixed.

The couple says they can't sleep in their bedroom, because the hole is directly under it. Tina Furlow says, "Every day you lay down in our bedroom and you look up and there is more and more cracks and we're just like, hey, look there's another one."

The couple has Citizens Insurance, but so far they have not been able to reach a settlement. A spokesperson for Citizens says they can't comment on the case, because it's now part of litigation.

The Furlows have hired attorney Joseph Porcelli. Porcelli says,"The Furlows have a very large void under their home. I would say that's rare. However, it does happen from time to time and when it does happen it's incumbent upon the insurance carriers to take that extra attention and speed for those particular cases, where it is the exception as is the Furlow's case."

Porcelli says all sink hole cases take time.  "With the Furlows however, due to the large void, they want a decision made fairly quickly, if not immediately because of the situation that occurred in Seffner," says Porcelli.

Tina Furlows just hopes something is done, soon.  "It's scary, because everybody on this street moved here and we thought we would live and die here and we all built our dream houses and now we are all like, why did we do this?"
