Manatee County Sheriff's officials collected 459 guns during a buyback today.
The gun buyback program ran from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., at the Crime Prevention Office located at 600 U.S. 301 Boulevard West, in Bradenton.
The gun buyback was a safe, no questions asked opportunity to dispose of any working firearm in return for cash. The Sheriff's Office paid $50 for handguns, $100 dollars for rifles and shotguns, and $150 for assault type weapons. They also accepted ammunition.
In all, officials handed out $37,950 in cash in exchange for the guns, which included 5 assault-type weapons.
The Manatee County Sheriff's office last hosted a gun buyback in August, 2009. At that time they collected 400 firearms.
