Gov. Scott says federal budget cuts could kill jobs in Defense

ST PETERSBURG -

Drastic budget cuts planned in Washington could lead to furloughs for more than 30-thousand Florida-based Department of Defense employees. That translates to more than 183 million dollars not flowing through the Florida economy.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, in Largo to tout bills to eliminate sales taxes on machinery, says he's worried about a trickle down effect to everyone. "Congress and the President should do their job. They need to balance their budgets because right now by them not doing their jobs, Florida families are gonna lose their jobs."

The governor sent a letter to President Obama, outlining his concerns.  Among them, what the cuts will do at Macdill Air force Base, home to US Central Command and US Special Operations Command. He asks, what will happen if the National Guard doesn't have the manpower to respond to wildfires, or hurricanes?  "They're taking a meat cleaver to the budget up there instead of a scalpel.

They need to be doing the right thing so Florida families have more jobs" said Governor Scott.
