Belleair Elementary hoax caller identified as 7-year-old

CLEARWATER, FL -

Clearwater police say they know who reported a fake elementary school shooting. The 911 caller who caused a commotion and put Belleair Elementary into lock-down is only seven-years-old. He's a first-grader at the school.

"I think once he spoke to detectives he realized the severity of what he had done," said Elizabeth Watts, spokesperson for Clearwater Public Safety.

What's more: Police said it was one of 9 phony phone calls the boy placed into 911 within a matter of a few days.

"The one where detectives were able to locate and identify him was trough a phone call he made the following day regarding a deceased person in the street," Watts said.

That dead person didn't exist.

"He really didn't go into specifics as to why [he made the calls] but the majority of the calls were kind of nondescript," Watts said. "He would call. They would ask: 'do you need police assistance?' He would say ‘yes.' They would ask: ‘where are you located' and he would just say ‘yes' and hang up."

The boy could face charges of misusing the 911 system.

"What's likely going to happen is he's going to go into a diversionary program that's similar to ones for arsonists," Watts said.

The 7 year-old didn't tell detectives why he made those calls. Parents and caretakers who were part of the panic Tuesday felt relief mixed with confusion.

"That kid - had a lot of parents worried," said Dreona Ricks, who has nieces at the school. "Even though he's still a baby - a kid - I just hope he doesn't make this mistake again."
