Bay area company wonders, where are the workers?

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

With so many people looking for jobs, why is a bay area employer looking for workers? Well paid workers. That's what officials with Freightcenter.com want to know.

The company recently moved from Pasco County to Palm Harbor, in Pinellas County, in the hope of attracting more employees. It has a massive 16-thousand square foot facility that is mostly empty. It wants to expand, big time. It's put up a billboard on U.S. 19, just north of its office, advertising sales jobs with training included. And, we're not talking about minimum wage jobs. The company is looking for about 60 employees. Sales positions are advertised at 45-grand.

Terese Kerrigan is the company's marketing director. She, and other company officials are surprised with the lack of interest. "We were expecting a flood (of applicants,)" said Kerrigan. "We've even hired new hr people to handle the applicants that we were hoping to receive. We put a bunch of things in order to make sure that we were kind of out there and exposed as far as creating a new applicant system to make it easier to apply."

The company operates much like an Orbitz or an Expedia for shipping, marrying shippers with carriers.

If you're interested in applying, we've created a link on this web site, just check under links we mentioned.
