Man arrested in connection with Largo office shooting

Posted: Updated:
LARGO, FL -

Largo police say a man who fired multiple shots at the BayView Pavillion Office Business Complex Wednesday morning, was distraught because of his wife's alleged affair.

Fred Michael Sumner, 53, walked into the lobby of the business complex where his wife worked, took a semi-automatic gun from his waist-band and started shooting, according to the police report.

One witness said, "Everyone was terrified, you think of Columbine, you think of a lot of stuff.  We didn't know what to do."  He didn't aim at anybody, but shot at doors and windows, police said. After firing several rounds, he shot himself in the abdomen.

Sumner is at an area hospital recovering from the wound. He is under arrest for criminal mischief and shooting within an occupied building.  Managers at businesses on the first floor told employees that they could go home for the day.  One person had to be taken out on a stretcher by paramedics because of stress from the situation.

His wife was not at the office complex at the time of shooting. Nobody was injured during the shoot-out.  Officials say damage from the shooting totaled $5000.
