Trayvon Martin's family marked the one-year anniversary of his shooting death with a candlelight vigil in New York City.
Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, were joined by actor Jamie Foxx and a crowd of about 200 people Tuesday evening in Union Square Park. They lit candles, and then extinguished them following a moment of silence at 7:17 p.m., the time their son was fatally shot.
The 17-year-old unarmed black teenager was killed Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman after the two got into a confrontation. It took weeks before Zimmerman was arrested, and he has claimed he was acting in self-defense.
The shooting of Trayvon Martin set off a national outcry over issues of race as well as stand-your-ground laws.
