MacDill Air Force Base is once again playing host to some pint-sized military family members who often carry much of the stress of a deployment even though they aren't personally sent anywhere.
Fifth graders from Tinker Elementary School boarded buses this morning to attend the annual MacDill Cares event that allows them to experience what their parents go through during a deployment. "They experience it then they begin to have that understanding of what it is their family member is doing, and it helps them better relate, better understand and so the next time their parent goes through this then they've been there," explained Vice Commander of the Sixth Air Mobility Command Colonel Kelly Martin.
Activities include a greeting from top military brass, transport to a hanger holding area and a mock deployment to Qatar. "Now I know what it's been like," said 11-year-old Gabrielle Greenley whose dad is currently deployed to Korea. "Now I'm going to learn some more," she said.
Students got a chance to experience what it's like to eat pre-packaged military meals. They also learned about some of the specialty units that often travel overseas. This is the fifth year MacDill has hosted the student event, and it's become so successful officials say other air mobility commands around the country have begun duplicating the program.
