Drink up... Tampa's boil water notice is lifted

Posted: Updated:

The boil water advisory that's been in effect for City of Tampa water customers since Friday has been lifted. Water Department Director Brad Baird gave the all-clear Sunday morning.

"We finished the testing and all 25 samples came back negative for bacteria," said Baird.

Baird said the public should rest easy knowing contaminants never entered the system. Even if residents drank tons of tap water Friday before learning of the alert, they don't have to worry about their health, he said.

"I would just like to thank all of the public and our customers for their patience through this ordeal and a special thanks to the restaurants for staying open," said Baird.

The Assistant General Manager at The Bricks in Ybor City said Sunday's water news comes as a big relief after a hectic Friday and Saturday working around their regular water supply.

"It was pretty much around the clock checking up on ice and checking up that we had boiled water ready to go at any time's notice," said Joshua Gonzalez.

Baird told News Channel 8 Friday a squirrel was suspected of causing a temporary power outage at the city's main water treatment plant, which prompted the precautionary boil water alert to be issued. TECO crews confirmed they did find a deceased squirrel near the underground wires Sunday morning.

"It was a squirrel that crawled down into a conduit and chewed through the first feed and they have sealed that up so that will not happen again," said Baird.
