Pasco Sheriff has plan for probation violators

PASCO COUNTY, FL -

Pasco County Sheriff Nocco is proposing a pilot program to allow his office to be contracted out by the state Department of Corrections to do the work of supervising and arresting probation and parole violators in his county.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office regularly arrests felons who have violated their parole or probation.  Those requests come from the Florida Department of Corrections.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said, "We arrest people on probation all the time because they are committing other crimes.  We are constantly out there, we are actually doing the house checks to make sure they are where they are supposed to be."

Sheriff Nocco says his office is being overwhelmed by the requests. His office already has to do things like transport parole and probation violators for the state.

Sheriff Nocco added, "More and more we are overseeing this, and that's is why we are pushing forward saying there has got to be better way."

If approved by the legislature, the program would be the first of its kind in the state.

Sheriff Nocco went on to say, "I just think in Pasco County we can create change that can be model for the state of Florida because we are already following models that are working in other parts of the nation."

The Sheriff says allowing his office to arrest parole and probation violators would save the state money, while reducing bureaucracy at the state level.

He plans to travel to Tallahassee next week to meet with the governor's office to discuss the proposal.
