SARASOTA COUNTY, FL -

Mote Marine Laboratory workers released a healthy loggerhead turtle Big Bel into the wild on Lido Beach Friday.

Big Bel has stayed at Mote's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital since November 2012. The turtle was found near Fort Myers and treated at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife before arriving to Sarasota.

Big Bel had possible pneumonia and 22 pounds of epibiota (living algae and barnacles) growth on its carapace and other maladies. The turtle was missing parts of front and rear flippers.

After almost four months of treatment Big Bel seems fine. Mote workers say, turtles do well in the wilderness even without flippers.
