According to Hernando County Sheriff's Office 2012 Annual Crime report, overall crime rate has gone down in the county in 2012.
Sheriff Nienhuis said Thursday this is very gratifying to him.
"We are very happy with the overall drop in crime, but the violent crime reductions are really remarkable," he said. "The bottom line is that our citizens were less likely to be a victim last year than any time in the recent past."
The numbers show the downward trend, with the violent crimes and burglaries down over 10% and larcenies (thefts) down more than 12% last year.
Sheriff Nienhuis believed it had to do with one particular policy of the legislature, namely the policy of the longer sentences criminals have faced over the last several years.
"The fact that the statistics appear to support that position is exciting," Nienhuis said.
In total, Hernando County experienced an overall decrease of 11.8% in crimes, according to the 2012 Annual Crime report.
