PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Dozens of teachers in Pinellas County may soon be packing heat, but not on school grounds. More than a hundred teachers signed up for a free concealed carry class offered by International Executive Protection out of Clearwater.

Treasure Devening-Glenn is a teacher at Carwise Middle School in Palm Harbor. She says the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut did not prompt her to take the class. She says her husband is a police officer and she felt it was time to learn how to handle a firearm.

"It's helping me to not be afraid." Devening-Glenn said. "I wouldn't even pick up a gun before, so I feel like at least I'm not going to be really scared if I had to. "

Sgt. Tony Motley is one of the instructors of the course. He says the four hour class is only the beginning for these teachers, turned students.

"Just because you take a four hour course, does not make you proficient with a firearm." Motley said. "It's a lifetime of practicing and going onto other training and doing things like that. It's a constant skill level that you lose if you don't stay refreshed. "

But even if those teachers who enrolled in the course, do get their concealed carry permit, school officials say they will not be able to carry firearms on school grounds. District officials say that is against school board policy and against state law.

The course usually costs $75, but the company is offering it free to teachers. There is another class scheduled to take place this weekend.
