Public invited to comment on Clearwater Police Department

Posted: Updated:
CLEARWATER, FL -

An accreditation team evaluating The Clearwater Police Department is inviting the public to weigh in, on the department's policies and procedures.

A team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive in Clearwater on March 26 to examine all aspects of the Clearwater Police Department's policies, management, operations and support services.

In order to comply with the rigorous accreditation standards, the department must show the Commission that it has maintained compliance with about 260 standards of professionalism to continue its accreditation status that it earned in May 1998.

The assessment team is composed of police practitioners from other law enforcement agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview department employees and visit offices and other places where compliance with the standards can be observed.

Once the Commission's assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if CPD will receive accredited status. Accreditation is for three years. Verification by the team that CPD meets the Commission's standards is part of a voluntary process to gain or maintain accreditation--a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.

The Commission is asking for the public's input. People who wish to offer written comments about COD's ability to meet the standards of accreditation to please write CFA, P.O. Box 1489, Tallahassee, Florida 32302. A copy of the standards is available at www.flaccreditation.org.
