US Supreme Court: Good dog, Aldo!

TALLAHASSEE, FL -

The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the State of Florida Tuesday in the case regarding a K9 officer conducting a search for illegal drugs.

The Supreme Court unanimously reversed the Florida Supreme Court's judgment deciding that the police dog Aldo's sniff gave the K9 officer William Wheetley a probable cause to search Clayton Harris's truck for illegal drugs during a traffic stop.

"Because training records established Aldo's reliability in detecting drugs and Harris failed to undermine that showing, we agree with the trial court that Wheetley had probable cause to search Harris's truck," stated the court's opinion.

This decision clarifies whether or not it is legal for police officers to rely on dogs in detecting drugs.

"This victory is paramount to preserving our law enforcement officers' ability to use police dog alerts to locate illegal drugs and arrest those who possess them," stated Attorney General Pam Bondi.
