WINTER HAVEN, FL -

The Florida Department of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida will observe a national Through With Chew Week with Thursday as the Great American Spit Out day.

This effort is a part of the national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of smokeless tobacco products.

"Some youth may mistakenly believe that when they start smoking or use any tobacco product, they are able to quit very easily," said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong. "This type of addiction is very hard to break, and the health risks are extremely high for any tobacco product."

Constant exposure to tobacco juices from these smokeless products can lead to oral cancers, as well as other oral problems. It increases the risk of a heart attack and can cause the same issues as the sue of all tobacco products, according to the Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida's report.

A Floridian Rick Bender lost a third of his face to cancer caused by chewing tobacco. He shared his experiences with students at Winter Haven Jewett School of the Arts to support the campaign.

On the Great American Spit Out Day the campaign urges the smokeless tobacco users to quit using smokeless tobacco or pick a day to stop chewing. Tobacco Free Florida offers free services to help get rid of the nicotine addiction.
