Lakeland adding more red light cameras

Lakeland -

Lakeland City commissioners voted today to add 10 new red light cameras to the city's current arsenal. The vote comes despite opposition from several vocal residents.

"We all feel like we wasted our time," said Jim McGuire a Lakeland resident who opposes red light cameras. "We said our peace. We made good points, but they voted them in anyway."

Lakeland Police initially requested the addition of 15 more cameras. The city currently has five red light cameras.

Commissioners voted to install 10 more cameras, and Mayor Gow Fields says opponents of the plan do not represent the vast majority of Lakeland residents.

"There are a lot of people who weren't here today who've e-mailed us, called us, stopped us where they've seen us and said this is a no-brainer. What is taking you so long," Fields said.

The Florida Department of Transportation will review each of the new intersections where Lakeland plans to put new cameras to ensure they all meet state criteria.

Once approved by FDOT the cameras should be operational by summer time.
