Witness describes early morning fire at Tampa recycling plant

Posted: Updated:

Before sunrise, flames shot into the air OneSteel Recycling at 4943 Port Sutton Road in Tampa.   The flames were well above an eight foot fence that borders U.S. 41.  Crews from The Hillsborough Fire Rescue put three ladder trucks on the fire. A hazmet team responded to the scene.. And firefighters kept a close eye on a tank of diesel fuel nearby.

Witness Chris McConnell works just across the street from the recycling plant at a trucking company.  McConnell says he spotted a problem early in the morning. "About 3:15 this morning it was fireworks, a 4th of July grand finale, the sparklers, the ones that blow in the air and then after that about 15 or 20 minutes later it grew to what it became."

McConnell says the fireworks he saw this morning were different from anything he'd seen before. " It was very bright, very quick, very loud."

Hillsborough Fire Rescue says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
