Smoke still billowing from recycling metal fire at Port Sutton

Posted: Updated:

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue units are battling a fire at a recycling facility at Port Sutton.

The fire is burning at OneSteel Recycling, 4943 Port Sutton Road. Multiple units are on the scene.  Firefighters received the call around 4:15 a.m.  As of 9 a.m., smoke is still pouring from the scene.

"It's basically a big pile of metal on fire reacting to itself," said Public Information Officer Nicole Revette, with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

The pile is 30 to 40 feet high.  Firefighters are using a bulldozer to move part of the pile away from the area that is burning.  Authorities say the fire will likely be burning for a while.

Earlier, firefighters moved a tanker truck full of diesel and several dozen Acetylene tanks away from the flames.  They were not damaged.

Firefighters from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue worked throughout the day to contain the blaze.

Revette says crews used foam to spray on the fire to dissipate the heat.

Crews from the recycling plant also worked with firefighters to spread out stacks of metal at the recycling plant, as firefighters used water cannons from three ladder trucks to spray down on the stacks of metal.
