Citrus county mother charged with abusing daughter

CITRUS COUNTY -

Alyssia Skinner's baby girl weighs only 14 pounds. At 17 months, she should be almost double that. Citrus County deputies say the baby is a victim of extreme abuse."The woman basically kept the child in a very small room almost the size of a closet" said Sheriff's office spokesperson, Heather Yates.

Deputies say there was no crib, no toys. And the baby was confined to a two by two foot area on the floor. "Completely saturated with urine and feces, that the entire room was covered with debris. There were bottles that had maggots in them. It was just horrible place for a baby.

Skinner's arrest affidavit says Skinner shook the baby, blasted the air conditioner and caused her to have hypothermia, played the radio, gave her no toys, and withheld food.

Skinner had recently discovered, her baby's father is Alex Merrifield. His mother says the abuse started around Christmas, when Skinner tried to re-kindle their relationship, but Alex refused.

Skinner's Facebook postings from December contrast what deputies say she did to her baby. One says, "My baby girl is sick. Mommy loves you.... We just need to get your better soon." Another says "Got my baby and I place of our own today...one proud mommy. "

Her father's family is promising to help her recover.
