Citrus carjacker ready to face trial for murder of teacher

Posted: Updated:
CITRUS COUNTY -

The woman responsible for the fatal carjacking of a Citrus County teacher three years ago will likely use an insanity defense at her trial next week.

Lawyers for Jennifer Marino have been discussing a plea deal with prosecutors but said at a hearing today Marino is ready to stand trial next week.

She faces a possible life sentence

Marino was a fugitive and in violation of her felony probation for a prior carjacking when probation officers let her walk out of their offices in Inverness.

They waited 15 or 20 minutes before calling 9-1-1 to say Marino was acting strangely and possibly a danger to herself or others.

Within an hour Marino ran over 64-year-old Mary Haynie while trying to steal her car in a chance encounter at a nearby pet salon.
